You can actively prevent tooth loss from taking hold of your smile. This matters, because losing a tooth doesn’t just affect your appearance, but it affects oral health and can even cause misalignment in your smile. Naturally, Dr. Henry Danziger, strives to save damaged teeth whenever possible you can take an active part in tooth loss prevention as well. Let’s take a look.

1-Preventing injury to the mouth: Injuries to the mouth is a common cause of tooth loss, particularly for those who are active in high-impact sports or recreational activities where getting hit in the mouth is a possibility. Thankfully, this form of tooth loss is preventable. You can purchase a sports guard, often available at any sporting goods stores or online, when participating in these activities, and your teeth, gums, and other oral tissues will thank you!

2-Tooth decay prevention: Tooth decay can affect your smile if you neglect your oral hygiene, rely on a diet high in carbohydrates and sugar, and skipping your regular dental cleanings. As the decay spreads and further damages the tooth, treatment might require extraction. What can you do to prevent this form of tooth loss? Brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing at least once, and eating a balanced diet, along with six-month dental cleanings and checkups where Dr. Henry Danziger can detect cavities early, you can keep tooth decay away.

3-Gum disease prevention: Gum disease establishes a hold in your smile when dental plaque isn’t removed daily. With time it irritates healthy gum tissue, and if plaque hardens into tartar–a toxic substance–this irritation will lead to infected gum pockets. Ultimately, gum disease will deteriorate the underlying bone, which can result in loose teeth or tooth loss. To keep gum disease from attacking your smile, practice good oral habits (see above) brushing and flossing, and see your dentist regularly to check for signs of gum disease and to remove tartar from between teeth and along the gum line.
